Symptoms

  • Slow drains or gurgling throughout the house
  • Backups in the lowest drains
  • Sewage smell in the yard
  • Soggy ground or surfacing water over the field

What we check, in order

  1. Tank level — a high level points downstream; a normal one points to the house plumbing
  2. Effluent filter — clogged filters cause backups
  3. Baffles — broken baffles send solids to the field
  4. Lines and distribution box — broken, crushed or tipped
  5. The field — saturated, clogged or flooded by groundwater

Then the fix

Sometimes it's a filter cleaning or a new D-box. Sometimes it's a field or tank. You'll know which before you spend money.

Common questions

Will pumping fix it?

If the tank was just overdue, yes. If the field failed, only briefly.

Is a soggy yard always the field?

Not always — a leaking line or irrigation can also cause it.
